Wild about The Fourth

Happy pre-4th of July planning! Interestingly enough… red, white, and blue themed arrangements are probably my least favorite. I’m all about it on American flags and on festive desserts, but when I see a floral centerpiece with those three colors, I tend to cringe. Maybe it’s because more often than not, the roses and daisies are artificially dyed. I think a more natural, “hand-picked” approach would give me the freedom to appreciate a themed arrangement. So I took it upon myself to design an arrangement that is Sartorial Host approved! It embraces the wild side with natural greens that move organically and is speckled with our favorite patriotic colors.

FLORALS + SUPPLIES

  • Wide-mouthed vessel (6-8” opening)

  • 1” mesh chicken wire

  • Floral snips

  • 1 bunch of Love-in-a-Mist, ‘nigella’ white

  • 1 bunch of Love-in-a-Mist, ‘nigella’ blue

  • 1 bunch of jasmine vine with red buds

  • 1 bunch of garden sage

  • 1 bunch of wheat

STEPS

  1. Cut a 10” x 24” section of chicken wire and mold it to fit within the vessel. Folding the chicken wire to create a “crumple” effect will allow the stems more opportunities to stay in place as you are arranging.

  2. Fill the vessel with enough water so that all stems placed within the arrangement will be submerged.

  3. Start by layering the garden sage and wheat to create a greenery base. Varying the heights and placing stems closer and further out will create organic dimension to the arrangement. Reserve a few stems of sage and wheat for placement at the end.

  4. Blend in the ‘nigella’ white stems throughout the arrangement with some stems closer to the base and others further out on the sides and on top.

  5. Arrange the jasmine vine so that they flow organically away from the center of the arrangement. A few stems that reach out from the sides of the arrangement will give it a more natural aesthetic. Place the stems of jasmine with red buds in prominent areas so that it is seen as a focal point.

  6. Blend in the ‘nigella’ blue stems throughout the arrangement so they dot the greenery with tiny flecks of blue.

  7. Place any additional sage or wheat stems in the arrangement for final touches.
