This was captured on the day of the ceremony after the smilax and eucalyptus were layered onto the gazebo. Within the gazebo included the essential details for the ceremony in both serif and sans serif body text. Italicized text was used for the conversational portions of the invitation. The prominent typeface is called Love, by Jeremy Schneider, and can be found here. This became the identity of the wedding and used throughout various print collateral. The elegant ligature is what drew me to this particular typeface. During cocktail hour, we gathered around this Prohibition-era bar setup. This first part of the evening set the stage for the dinner and I wanted there to be an extra touch of florals paired with the warm glow of these crystal globe lamps. This floral arrangement also doubled as the centerpiece for our community table throughout the weekend. Given the cold weather, the florals stayed fresh outside in the chill of the night. If you’ve been following along, one of the details around the place setting were these matte black metal rings that were sewn onto the tablecloth. I had two purposes for these unique chargers, 1) to ensure everything was evenly spaced and make it easy on the day of the event for the plates to be set and 2) to allow fresh jasmine vine to be wired around each of the dinnerware. If you look at the charger ring, I’ve sewn the ring at two points. This gives the ring flexibility to rotate around and still ensure that it stays in place. Because you can lift the ring away from the tablecloth, it gives you the opportunity to wrap a delicate jasmine vine around the plates. With chairs set on both sides of the table, it freed up space for me to create a beautiful cascade of fresh greens for final pièce de résistance. The garland starts about 9” in from the end of the table, drapes down the table, and winds along the ground. The lush garland is made up of seeded eucalyptus and plumosa fern as the base. Jasmine vine is then added to the garland for a more wild and natural aesthetic. The rest of the garland is then filled with white veronika, chocolate lace, white gomphrena, and olive branches. At the same time, it needed to be light and airy to flow with nature. I found these beautiful lichen branches that extended almost 6’. I took three bundles and split them between two glass orb vases. I envisioned these branches to create a sage green canopy that stretched overhead and they did just that. I love how the branches are woven between the tapers and create the most elegant execution. Given all the glassware and table setting accoutrement, I wanted scale and impact without having to sacrifice space. To start, I ran a single strand of globe lights that suspended above from tree to tree. At night the strand of light seemed to float and provide ample base lighting to the dinner. Moving to the table, I wanted the soft glow of candlelight to gently hum throughout the dinner. The 36” taper candles were stunning in scale and in time. The scale provided a small flame to float a feet above our heads as we enjoyed the dinner. As time passed, the candles slowly burned and a cascade of wax began to form as the warm glow lowered through our conversations. Thankfully, the winds were low and the candles managed to stay lit the entire evening. The menus were printed on the same Crane Lettra in Pearl White on a 110LB paper. Segments of the wood block illustration that I used for the welcome cards were pulled back into the menu and placed as headers for the dinner and cocktail menus. I tied each menu set with a fringed ribbon in ombré tones of cream and off-white. I left a good length of ribbon on each menu set to allow for a gentle cascade down the side of the table. From afar, you’re able to see the color suite of ribbons set along the tablecloth. It was important that it didn’t feel completely out of place sitting at this table in the middle of the field. In balance with the tan linen tablecloth, I found cream dinnerware with a natural hand thrown edge and a crackle finish that provided an elegant yet organic perspective. Paired with black flatware, the modernity of the lines and color of the utensils elevates the place setting. I created the outline of a charger by using matte black rings sewn into the tablecloth. I wanted it to feel light and airy, and yet layered. Atop the dinnerware, custom embroidered napkins with my monogram were wrapped with fox and hare napkin rings to add a bit of brass and wildness. The idea was to bring a bit of wilderness to the table as if the forest animals leaped onto the table and found its way to each setting. I selected a progression of two wines for the dinner, both being red, so that freed up the table space with just a simple red wine glass. To balance the height of the centerpieces and candle tapers, I wanted a low water glass, so I found these vintage lowball glasses. I love that each is different and unique, yet together collectively feels curated. The vintage lowballs were all within the same color palette of the brass, black, and green hues. I love adding place cards to any dinner because it shows a level of consideration and a way to personalize the experience for each guest. I always consider the types of conversations guests will have, who they haven’t seen in a while, and new friends they might like to meet as I’m setting the seating chart. With this custom length linen tablecloth, I wanted the name cards to be embroidered in a coordinating palette and actually sewn into the tablecloth. There’s a gravitas to the permanence of the name being physically attached to the tablecloth and yet the idea of it serving the purpose for one evening makes it that much more special. I had each name embroidered onto a patch that was then ironed and sewn on at the top of each place setting. As I looked for campsites, I decided on Wimberley because of the convenient access for guests that still felt remote enough to create that private escape for everyone. With a few cabins near each other, I was able to capture a bit of sprawling land to set up camp. This gave me the freedom to work with the landscape and create a stunning birthday dinner backdrop. For seating, I chose reclaimed folding chairs that kept on theme with the camping aesthetic and made it easy for load in and load out. For the birthday dinner, I wanted to create a long 12’ table with seating on either side. To establish a seamless table and for an extra finesse, I had a custom linen tablecloth made to fit the tables with a perfect full length drape that just barely touched the ground. I brought back the same type-driven pattern and created a negative space cutout and vintage, woodblock image header to run down the center. With our weekend chef I planned our meals and I wanted to provide a few details of the dinner cuisine to give guests a taste of what’s to come. The top header was the perfect image that captured the overall weekend glamp aesthetic. Over the years I’ve learned much about this technique and interestingly, back in the day, the true sign of a skilled letterpress printer was to see absolutely no impression. The die blocks were only meant to kiss the surface of the people leaving just the ink behind. But in time the practice and effort of letterpress revealed a different impression that is now a staple in the wedding industry. There is a beauty to the visual tactility that is second to none. For this birthday, I gathered a few friends to celebrate in the hills of Wimberley with a little glamping weekend. Preliminary plans were communicated prior to the weekend, but upon arrival, I wanted my guests to received a little letterpress magic to walk them through the weekend festivities. BUILD YOUR CATCH ALL TOOLBOX Over the years of planning and hosting events, I’ve built a very helpful catch all box of tools, knick knacks, and a MacGyver-esque collection of objects. PREPARE BATCHES IN CANNING BOTTLES Every good party needs libations or a bubbly beverage to keep things afloat. If you are hosting a party with more than 4 to 6 guests, plan for batching a few drinks and easy to grab drinks. I’ve tried to play bartender to a party of 20+ and that did not pan out the way I expected. Let’s just say I wasn’t able to spend time with guests and there might have been a few cocktail casualties. Being able to have a hired bartender is a nice luxury, but isn’t always needed for every event. I keep 8 to 10 of these Bormioli Rocco clear glass bottles on hand to prep drink mixers, batched lemonades, and cocktails for all occasions. I know it may seem like a bit of overkill, but there’s nothing more satisfying at the end of a party than knowing that all the trash, broken glass, food, and liquids are safely stored in bags and ready to be tossed into the dumpster. I can’t tell you how many times these racks have been a complete life saver. I keep 4 to 5 of these racks stored in my garage and any time I’m planning an event offsite and want to bring my own glassware, I whip the racks out, load in the glassware, and stack them up. It’s super convenient for load-in and load-out and it keeps things protected in transit. I’ve tried the wrap the glasses in hand towels and stack them in a grocery bag route, and let me tell you, not that effective. I wanted there to be a reveal within a reveal. Cue the black kraft wrapping paper and ribbon. Also, I really just wanted to have custom grosgrain ribbon printed. Having my name on the ribbon is a fun touch and it acts as a calling card to let them know who is sending them the package. It would be a little redundant for me to have a card and envelope on top of what is actually another “envelope” and card invitation, so the ribbon acts in two regards. I wrapped them in natural kraft paper and contrasting black waxed cord to coordinate with the overall aesthetic. The books were then placed inside the glass box behind the invitation, so it would only be revealed once guests open the glass door. Olson Kundig, the architect, designed a stunning modern black steel and glass structure that houses the restaurant. After deciding on Comedor, I spotted these glass boxes at Ikea and the idea immediately came to me. I loved the idea of setting the invitation in the door of the glass box that swings open to a small bonsai plant. Much like the life we will be bringing to the party at Comedor, this living bonsai brings life to this invitation. Because the forest-like tablescape was layered with many exotic florals, I created a card with the floral breakdown for guests to learn their names. Behind that card is the menu listing out the different courses. I designed these cards so they staggered, revealing the title of the evening as they read through each card.
